Dancing the small moments

Dancing the Small Moments is a collection of animations, commissioned as part of Yorkshire Dance’s ‘In Mature Company’; a 3-year community dance project, whose purpose was to reduce loneliness and isolation for adults with dementia in care homes in Leeds.

Dementia is a broad term used to describe a set of symptoms which can damage nerve cells, reducing the ability to function and disrupting pathways. Dancing can give the luxury of abandoning words to communicate better.

The animations follow the artist; Kirsty, as she connects with the residents through dance and reflects on her experience. We meet Enid, Jinara, Malcolm, Trevor and Anna, and learn how dementia affects everyone differently, and how different approaches to dance practice and participation in creative sessions have a positive impact on health and wellbeing.

Through our illustration and animation style, we wanted to represent the physical sensation of confusion and the blend of reality and illusion that is part of living with dementia. We wanted the characters to feel very real and personal amongst their sometimes surreal settings. Representing the world from their perspective as best we can.

“We have loved working with Hungry Sandwich Club, they brought ideas and creativity to a difficult subject. It’s been such an exciting project to work on and to see the ideas/thoughts brought to life. Please work with these guys.”
